QUATERNARY AMMONIUM COMPOUNDS (QUATS)

Quats are manufactured using high purity tertiary amines with various alkyl chain lengths (C12 to C18). These can be differentiated by their form (powder, viscous liquid, solution), by the alkyl (carbon) chain length of the tertiary amines used, and by their anion (chloride or bromide). Quats are active against the most common micro-organisms, such as bacteria, fungi and algae. They are widely used in pharmaceuticals as the active ingredient or as an excipient, because of their preservative properties.

Novo Nordisk Pharmatech produces Quats in accordance with cGMP ICH Q7 guidelines for API, the highest available quality standard.
